LIPOSUCTION CHARLOTTE NC, AREA
LIPOSUCTION
Dr. Peter Capizzi has treated hundreds of patients with liposuction and has utilized the most current techniques available. Additionally, he has been sought out by others for second opinions to repair and improve results done elsewhere.
One of the most common procedures in all of plastic surgery and at Stillwater Plastic Surgery, P.A. is liposuction. Dr. Capizzi tries to encourage only healthy patients around their ideal body weight to under liposuction surgery. Liposuction, when done in the appropriate patient, is a very rewarding procedure, with minimal downtime, and excellent benefits.
Liposuction is the removal of fat and has evolved as a procedure since the 1980s. Originally described as a "dry" procedure it has improved to "wet" or "tumescent" type of liposuction. The tumescent refers to placement of saline solution with or without a numbing medication (lidocaine) through a small incision for which the removal of fat will occur (liposuction). This tumescent solution has allowed for easier fat removal, decrease discomfort, and quicker recovery. For me, it is utilized for most every case. Once the tumescent portion is done, the actual liposuction can be performed with the traditional method or an advanced method.
Liposuction is the use of a suction machine and hollow cannula or straw. When this cannula is placed through a tiny incision adjacent to the area to be treated, it can then remove the fat. In our opinion, only certified surgeons trained and boarded by the American Board of Medical Specialties should perform this procedure. They have had their competency tested. As a board certified plastic surgeon, I have passed a written and oral exam on the subject and had my cases reviewed. Liposuction is thought to be an "easy" procedure to do, but we feel it is a hard procedure to do extremely well.
Power-Assisted liposuction removes fat with a reciprocating cannula tip. This advancement has allowed us to be more precise and enhance the experience. Easier fat removal translates in most to increase recovery and decrease discomfort.
Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction uses ultrasound technology to heat the fat and skin to "melt" fat into an emulsion. Although some ultrasound cannulas are hollow and can provide some suction, most folks required traditional liposuction to follow the ultrasound procedure.
Laser liposuction or laser lipolysis like Smart Lipo, Prolipo from Sciton, and Prolipo from Palomar all represent another method to heat the fat, create an emulsion, and heat skin. It is the heating of skin that can also cause some contraction. None of these laser liposuction machines listed removes any fat.
Reston foam sheeting is placed on the areas treated with liposuction. This alleviates or diminishes bruising greatly. Not all practices utilize this, but Dr. Capizzi feels that this also will increase recovery.
Compression garments are worn immediately after surgery. Our patients are required to wear 2 garments for approximately 1-2 weeks each. It is our experience that this to aids in recovery. Dr. Capizzi allows full activity as soon as one desires, usually within 48 hours from the procedure.
Fat is removed and usually is within 1-3 liters. Risks of liposuction surgery are bruising, infection, and asymmetries. Although cellulite can be improved at times, it is completely variable.
