Liposuction, the breakdown and suction removal of fat, can be a miracle procedure for many patients. During liposuction, a cannula or straw is placed through a tiny incision adjacent to the treatment area to skillfully suction fat. Dr. Peter J. Capizzi has treated hundreds of patients with liposuction in 15 years of active practice. In addition to vast experience, the doctor utilizes the most current techniques. Dr. Capizzi is also often – far too often, he believes – sought out for second opinions to repair and improve liposuction performed elsewhere.
Dr. Capizzi always advises patients to make informed decisions and consult with various physicians. This is how we all make good medical decisions. Today, liposuction has moved into the medical mainstream. Dr. Capizzi and Stillwater Plastic Surgery strongly urge you to engage only with specialists for liposuction procedures. Specifically, board-certified plastic surgeons trained and credentialed by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Board-certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Capizzi – and others in the area – have successfully completed written and oral exams. Their competency has been tested and established – to your benefit. The truth is, liposuction is an “easy” procedure to do, but hard to do extremely well!
DR. CAPIZZI’S LIPOSUCTION APPROACH
Today, Dr. Capizzi performs the “wet” or tumescent type of liposuction almost exclusively. Medical experts agree that it is far superior to the original “dry” procedure practiced many years ago. Here, a small incision is made (with or without the numbing medication lidocaine). The area is flushed with the tumescent solution to allow for easier removal of fat in the suctioning process. Dr. Capizzi achieves excellent results with the use of micro-cannulas. As the name suggests, these are very small, precision devices. Dr. Capizzi frequently introduces Power-Assisted Liposuction from Microaire. The doctor’s liposuction technique will be groomed to the specific patient and objective.
Dr. Capizzi is experienced with all forms of liposuction and the most current technologies:
Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL): This approach effectively removes fat with a reciprocating cannula tip. The micro-cannula allows for even greater precision. Dr. Capizzi is an expert in Power-Assisted Liposuction. He deploys the latest advances to improve the patient experience and outcomes. In most cases, easier fat removal translates into a less discomfort and more rapid recovery.
Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (UAL): As the name suggests, here ultrasound technology – high-pitched sound waves – is employed to heat the fat and “melt” it into a more easily removable emulsion for suctioning. This can reduce discomfort, promote a faster recovery – and produce great results. Dr. Capizzi has utilized UAL thousands of times and will introduce the procedure if it’s right for the patient.
Laser Liposuction or Laser Lipolysis: You may have heard terms like Smart Lipo from Sciton, and Prolipo from Palomar. Dr. Capizzi is very familiar with these liposuction methods. He’s been called upon to revise unsatisfactory results. Dr. Capizzi believes he can provide his patients with better liposuction options and outcomes.
Vaser Lipo: Patients sometimes ask about Vaser Lipo, a type of Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction available today. Dr. Capizzi has experience with this specific technique and machine. Yet, he sees better results and faster recovery times achieved through other approaches. Dr. Capizzi is always available to discuss the pros and cons of various techniques. This is a great topic for your consultation.
As the liposuction procedure nears completion, Dr. Capizzi introduces Reston foam sheeting in treatment areas to diminish bruising and tenderness. This is an uncommon extra step Dr. Capizzi takes on the patient’s behalf. Post-surgery, Dr. Capizzi will ask that you wear compression garments for 1-2 weeks to aid recovery. You may resume full activity as soon as you feel ready, typically 48 hours after the procedure.
Dr. Capizzi’s patients report that liposuction is extremely rewarding almost immediately after surgery. The results are in the mirror. And there’s more good news. If your weight is stable, the normal contraction of the skin following liposuction usually will continue for 8-12 months. So liposuction results can improve with time!
A word about fat’s cousin: pesky cellulite. While liposuction can improve cellulite on occasion, results are varied. Stillwater Plastic Surgery does, however, offer procedures to improve skin quality after liposuction. SkinTyte™ is a favorite among Dr. Capizzi’s patients. During SkinTyte treatments, laser pulses are expertly passed over the targeted area and absorbed at the deepest layers of the skin to stimulate collagen replacement. Dr. Capizzi highly recommends it (and patients do too!).
